Council approves same-day transit fare cut and authorizes request for qualifications for new transit software

The Brainerd City Council voted to reduce same-day fares on Brainerd's transit service from $6 to $5 and to authorize staff to solicit a request for qualifications to purchase and implement new transit technology.
Safety & Public Works Committee Chair Tad Erickson told the council that the transit department ended the year with positive net revenue and was able to place funds into reserves. Erickson said those reserves allowed the city to consider both the fare reduction and reinvestment in outdated scheduling and dispatch software that currently requires manual entries and manual dispatching.
The two motions passed without extended debate. Council approved the fare reduction on a voice vote; the motion to solicit qualifications for transit software (purchase and implementation) also passed and will allow staff to begin vendor selection work for a modern dispatch and scheduling system.
Why it matters: Reducing the same-day fare may lower a barrier to ridership and the new software is intended to reduce manual work and make scheduling and dispatching more efficient for the transit department.
Next steps: staff will publish a request for qualifications for transit technology vendors and proceed with vendor evaluation and procurement planning.
