Norwin reports $220,000 raised for elementary playgrounds; improvements planned this summer

Dr. McCracken reported that Norwin School District’s recent playground fundraising campaign raised $220,000 for improvements across five elementary schools.
Dr. McCracken said the funds were raised by walk‑a‑thons, donations and PTA support. “Across our five elementary buildings, including Hillcrest, we raised a total of $220,000,” Dr. McCracken said.
Dr. McCracken outlined planned projects by school. Hauntown raised nearly $100,000 and will install a large climbing and sliding structure this summer with shade coverings and a standalone sensory panel. Sheridan Terrace raised almost $50,000 and will expand its playground nearly twofold, add fencing and new surfacing; the site also plans a wheelchair‑accessible merry‑go‑round. Stewartsville raised about $16,000 and has additional PTA funds to finalize plans. Sunset Valley raised nearly $22,000 and will add grass play areas, a rubber walkway and extend play space. Hillcrest will add Gaga pits and other indoor/outdoor play options.
Satterfield and other presenters noted the district uses some indoor spaces for play and physical education and that principals will share e‑blasts so families can see completed purchases and planned events. Mrs. Willig was described as planning a special time for Hillcrest students who participated in fundraising to visit the new playground.
Board members thanked staff and community organizations. Dr. McCracken also acknowledged Norwin Rotary and Norwin Lions for fundraising events that supplied gift cards and food for students with weekend food insecurity.
No formal board action on playground purchases was recorded at the meeting; staff said installations are planned for this summer and will be completed by individual schools.
