Board approves boundary changes to ease crowding at Chaffee Trail Middle School

The Duval County School Board voted 7–0 on March 4 to waive a provision of board policy 5.44 and approve boundary changes affecting Chaffee Trail Middle School, Westside Middle School and Lakeshore Middle School for implementation in the 2025–26 school year.
Superintendent Michael Bernier told board members the changes respond to projected enrollment growth at Chaffee Trail. “We’re expecting between as many as 600 to 800 students to arrive to Chaffee in the sixth grade alone,” Bernier said, and the rezoning is intended to shift enrollment to nearby schools with available capacity.
Bernier said district planners used permit and housing-growth models to forecast where new students will be and drew boundaries to relieve the overcrowded school while giving room for future growth. Board members approved the motion after a brief discussion; no public speakers addressed the item during the hearing.
The waiver and boundary adjustments will be effective for the 2025–26 enrollment year. Bernier said the district will include the boundary changes in the master facilities report and will continue to monitor growth.
Board action: motion passed 7–0. The motion was moved by Board Member Willey and seconded by Board Member Ricardo.
The superintendent said this is a pre-emptive response to a growth pattern; the district will return to the board if further adjustments are needed. No relocation of school campuses was decided as part of this vote.
