Duval board adopts new K–4 math and K–3 reading intervention materials

The Duval County School Board on March 4 approved new elementary intervention materials for mathematics and English language arts after a public hearing and recommendation from a district review committee.
The board voted 7–0 to adopt Ready Florida Best Mathematics (Curriculum Associates) as the district’s first-choice math intervention for grades K–4 and Lexia Core5 Reading (Lexia Learning Systems) as the top K–3 reading intervention. The votes followed a presentation by Paula Renfro, chief officer for academic services, who described the district’s multi-stage review involving district staff, teachers and community reviewers.
Renfro told the board the review process began with the Florida Department of Education’s preliminary eligible list, invited vendor submissions, department evaluations and school-level reviews. “The materials with highest review rankings … are sent to schools electronically for teachers and school staff to review materials and provide feedback,” she said. The committee sizes reported were 16 reviewers for math interventions and 34 for reading interventions.
Committee slides shown to the board used color coding to indicate strengths and issues; Ready Florida Best Mathematics was the committee’s top math choice because it provided “a wealth of instructional support with small-group instruction as well as family communication and activities,” Renfro said. For reading the committee recommended Lexia Core5 for “explicit small-group instruction,” language-support features and parent progress communications.
Board members held no further discussion after the presentation and approved the item. The purchases and adoption will proceed under the district’s normal procurement and implementation timeline.
Votes at a glance: the motion to adopt the listed intervention materials passed 7–0. The motion was moved by Board Member Balduk and seconded by Vice Chair Kearney.
The adoption follows statute and board policy procedures for instructional materials review and public notice. District staff said the public hearing held before the vote is part of the adoption process required by Florida statute.
