Board approves $1.5 million DOE workforce grant to expand CTE programs

The Bay District School Board approved acceptance and implementation steps for a Workforce Capitalization grant from the Florida Department of Education totaling about $1.5 million at its Feb. 11 meeting.
District staff said the grant will fund expansion or improvement of seven career and technical education (CTE) programs across the district. Among the proposed additions is a criminal-justice cluster pathway focused on telecom/9-1-1 operations at Bozeman, a program district staff described as training students to serve as 9-1-1 dispatchers and telecommunications operators.
"We have laid out how we want to attack and what our priority is for the programs," a district staff member said during the meeting, adding that the grant includes extensions if the district cannot identify a qualified instructor or suitable space within the initial funding timeframe.
District staff said the program concept grew from conversations with local partners, including a meeting that involved the county sheriffs office and local dispatch personnel. Officials said space and a certified instructor must be identified before the telecom pathway can start; no firm start date was given.
Board members moved and approved the grant as part of the action items. The motion carried on the roll call taken at the meeting.
District staff said purchases and spending under the grant cannot begin until the approval process is complete and the district completes any required contract steps with its grant consultant and the Florida Department of Education.
