The Champaign County Board Environment & Land Use Committee approved a resolution to create a county board select committee to study carbon sequestration activities and report back to the board.
The resolution, moved by Mala and seconded by Dr. Stewart, directs the county to assemble a task force that committee members said will include local businesses and organizations; the Prairie Research Institute indicated it would provide technical experts. A member said the plan is to limit the task force to about four to six meetings so the work can be brought to the Zoning Board of Appeals and concluded by the end of the calendar year.
Board members asked that the task force provide periodic check-ins so the county board can track progress; one board member noted the committee could set expectations and timelines during its organization. The committee voted to approve the resolution and the item was forwarded to the county board for final action.
