Outside agencies present funding requests and program updates at Madison County budget work session

Representatives from regional economic development groups, colleges, nonprofit housing and social-service providers briefed the Madison County Board of Supervisors on program activity and funding requests during a budget work session Tuesday.

The presentations ranged from marketing and site-readiness support for business recruitment to requests for modest local operating support for education, housing, senior services and animal welfare programs. Several presenters said grant and state funding remain important but limited; some requested modest increases in county support, while several agencies requested the same funding level as last year.

The meeting began with a request from Central Virginia Partnership for Economic Development (CVPED). Helen (last name not specified), a CVPED representative, thanked the county for continuing membership and said the partnership “shares 100% of [leads] with Tracy,” referring to the county’s economic development contact, and that CVPED promotes Madison County on centralvirginia.org. Helen said CVPED is seeking a regional per-capita funding increase (from 50 cents to 62 cents) but that “because we have a $10,000 minimum, you are not impacted by that increase.”

Germanna Community College asked the board for $4,000 to support local student activities and recruitment that state funds cannot cover.
