Wayne County commissioners approved an amendment that increases the per-house maximum under the 2023 Homebuyer Assistance Program administered through the Wayne County Home Consortium; the change does not increase the program’s overall allocation.
Hassan Shaikh, director of economic development, and Delorean Holmes, economic vitality director, explained staff are raising the per-unit assistance amount “based off of market trends” so the program can better help eligible buyers in the current housing market. Shaikh said the change is permitted under the HUD HOME program and is intended to address rising purchase prices and the needs of households at or below 60% of area median income.
“We're increasing just to make sure that we're able to allow for enough funding to to repair [sic] a house,” Shaikh said; he later corrected himself and clarified he meant purchase assistance rather than rehabilitation when describing the change.
Commissioners moved to approve the amendment; the motion carried.
