Building Code Council forms Group 1 code correlation committee

The Building Code Council executive committee voted to form a Group 1 code correlation committee to resolve cross-code conflicts identified in this cycle’s code change proposals.
The committee will be formed under the council’s bylaws and, as proposed, include the standing committee chairs (BFRW and MVPE) and the tag chairs for Group 1 codes; those tag chairs will serve as the committee’s core membership, and additional tag members will be invited to participate when proposals affect their technical area. BFRW committee chair Roger Haringa moved the motion to form the committee; the motion was seconded and approved by voice vote.
Council members and staff said the new group is intended to make correlation decisions for a small set of Group 1 proposals that staff and tag members flagged as needing additional alignment across the building, fire, mechanical and energy codes. Roger Haringa told the executive committee the standing committee had already flagged a handful of proposals that need correlation and that the correlation committee would typically meet once to resolve those items before the standing committee forwards final language to the full council for visibility.
Members said the committee is intended to be a narrowly focused, procedural body rather than an open-ended, permanent panel. The proposed membership discussed on the record included the BFRW and MVPE chairs and the tag chairs for Group 1 codes; the chairs said they would invite subject-matter tag members to participate when specific proposals require cross-code input.
Staff cautioned the committee would require some additional staff time to prepare agenda packets and support the single or limited meetings; Dustin (staff) estimated the work could be completed in one meeting of two to three hours for the set of proposals currently identified.
The executive committee asked the standing committee chairs to finalize membership and meeting timing; BFRW chair Roger Haringa indicated he would chair the correlation committee with MVPE chair Damon Doyle as co-chair. The committee’s formation will be recorded in the standing committee minutes and reported to the full council at the next meeting.
