Leon County awards landfill closure contract, plans future park development

The Leon County Board of County Commissioners voted unanimously to award a contract to T & K Construction to complete required closure work at the county's Class I and Class III south landfill.
County administrators said the closure activity has been budgeted over a number of years and is consistent with requirements to close the landfill. The board voted to accept staff's recommendation and approve the contract during the meeting's general business period.
The action implements a long-running obligation tied to the cell-by-cell lifecycle of the landfill. County staff told commissioners the county closed the site to household garbage in 2015 and has pursued a master plan for the property that envisions transforming the site into a regional park. County officials said phase two of that master plan, including consultant engagement to finish buildout for the full 600-acre site, will come before the board later this year.
Commissioners noted existing recreational uses on parts of the site, including cross-country trails and regional events, and framed the closure work as consistent with preparing the property for future park amenities. The motion to award the contract passed unanimously.
The county administrator and public works staff said funding for the closure work had been accumulated over multiple budget cycles and that scheduling and phasing follow environmental and regulatory requirements.
