The Miami Beach Public Safety and Neighborhood Quality of Life Committee discussed adding requirements for secure and accessible bicycle and micromobility storage to the city’s special event review process and recommended advancing a pilot to the full commission.
Commissioner Alex Fernandez, sponsor of the item, framed the proposal as a way to support alternative transportation at large events that draw heavy traffic. Lisette Adrogante, Director of Tourism and Culture, told the committee the city’s production industry council supported the idea and that a pilot would test cost and logistics. “In the memo before you, you can see examples of, the cost to do for up to a hundred bicycles is between 2 and 3,000,” Adrogante said, and recommended a six‑month pilot from June through December.
Adrogante and staff suggested differentiating requirements by event size and type, and recommended focusing the requirement on large events—examples cited included Art Basel, South Beach Wine & Food and the Miami Boat Show. The production industry council suggested waiving the additional square‑footage fee as an incentive to event producers that set up a bicycle valet area.
Public commenters praised the idea and offered operational feedback. Matthew Gotano urged attention to location and convenience: “not only should they should they do it, but they should have the location of the bike valet to be as convenient as the auto valet,” and recommended that satellite fairs along the beach and beach walk also provide bike valet access. Resident Jane Krupp asked that event and facility rules accommodate helmets; she said of an earlier Art Basel visit, “they wouldn't let me in with my helmet,” which she said discouraged helmet use.
Chair Commissioner Laura Dominguez agreed to be listed as a cosponsor, and the chair closed the item by directing staff to send a positive recommendation to the full city commission.
The committee did not adopt a binding ordinance; the action recorded at the meeting was a committee recommendation to forward the pilot proposal and incentives to the full commission for approval and implementation details.
