PLPOA reports multi-year wildfire mitigation and flags hydrant inspection needs

PLPOA representatives said the organization is in year four of a five-year wildfire mitigation plan after accepting ownership of green-belt land. They told the meeting that the association has mitigated well over 100 acres to date using a mix of grant funds, PLPOA matching and volunteer labor, and that last year the sheriff’s office provided manpower for mitigation work in some areas.
Presenters said they are coordinating closely with Adaptive Partners (wildfire partners) and the Pagosa-area fire chief, and that a priority is ensuring that community fire hydrants are inspected and functional. PLPOA leaders said hydrants in some parts of the PLPOA had not been inspected in over 10 years and that they are developing a plan with fire department partners to test hydrant pressure and functionality and to identify manpower and funding for inspections.
County support: Archuleta County staff noted the county made a $5,000 contribution in the 2024 budget to help update the community fire plan — a document that PLPOA leaders and county staff said has helped secure additional grants for mitigation work.
Ending: PLPOA said it plans to continue mitigation activities in partnership with the county and local fire services as conditions evolve and the county moves toward fire-season restrictions.
