“We really wanna some sort of alliance, a tool that combines all 3 areas, government, public sector, private sector, and academia,” a committee member said, describing the intended model as a public‑private initiative that would include industry leaders in later phases.
Members cited examples: Laredo College’s ability to create short, targeted certifications (mentioned as “very prompt and very fast”), the importance of follow‑up services to track graduates’ job placement, and the challenge of retaining graduates because of limited local high‑paying opportunities.
Staff said conversations with private entities have begun and that the city manager’s office is interested. Staff asked the committee to consider the initiative as a work item for the year and to help define the model and partners. No formal motion or funding decision was made at the meeting.
