Commission tables private-act proposal to impose mayoral term limits

Hamilton County commissioners voted Feb. 5 to table Resolution 2-25-6, a request that the county’s state delegation introduce a private act to impose term limits on the office of Hamilton County Mayor and submit the question to a county referendum.
Commissioner Helton said he supports term limits in principle but moved to table the resolution because of unanswered questions about implementation and the measure’s effect on county government. “There’s some items that are not clear…because this will fundamentally change county government,” Helton said during the discussion and then moved to table. The motion to table was seconded and carried by roll call; the clerk announced seven votes in favor of tabling the item.
Commissioners raised procedural and practical issues during the discussion. Several sought clarity about whether a private act would require a supermajority locally to place a matter on the ballot, and what threshold would be required later to enact a private act at the state level. Commissioners noted that taking the item off the table requires a supermajority of the commission (eight votes), and some said they prefer to develop more detail with the mayor and the county’s legislative partners before resubmitting the matter.
Clerks recorded the tabling vote as 7 yes votes to table; the resolution remains on the table pending further action by the commission or staff.
