Sandy Springs opens sensor-activated pedestrian crossing on High Point Road

Sandy Springs has activated a new pedestrian crossing at High Point Road and Forest Hills Drive, city staff announced.

City staff said the crossing includes a flashing beacon that can be activated either by pressing the push button or automatically when a person stands on the ADA-compliant ramp; the lights flash to alert drivers to stop and allow pedestrians to cross.

The improvement is intended to increase safety for people walking or running in the area and for attendees of the nearby Congregation Beth Tfilah, a city staff member said. “The flashing beacon can be activated the standard way by pressing the button or by simply standing on the ADA ramp,” the staff member said. “That will activate the lights, which will flash to let cars know to stop and let pedestrians safely cross the road.”

According to city staff, the crossing project on High Point Road is complete and powered on. The sensor detection was designed to increase accessibility and inclusivity by enabling hands-free activation from the ADA ramp.

City staff also encouraged residents to follow the City of Sandy Springs on social media for updates on other projects.

The announcement did not specify funding sources, installation contractor, or maintenance responsibilities and provided no timetable for related crossings elsewhere in the city.
