Senate passes bill to reduce duplicate reporting between prosecutors and attorney general

The Senate unanimously passed Senate Bill 18, a bill that, according to sponsor Senator Wallace, reduces redundant filings when the Legislative Auditor's office reports suspected improper or illegal practices.
Wallace said the previous process allowed both local prosecutors and the attorney general to pursue the same matters and required duplicate reports; the bill, requested by the attorney general's office, gives discretion that avoids double work. Under current practice the AG must be deputized by prosecutors on a case-by-case basis if the AG handles the matter; Wallace said the bill streamlines that process and was requested by the attorney general.
No senators spoke in opposition on the floor and the bill passed by voice roll call, 35-0. The bill will be transmitted to the House.
