Commissioners hear jail renovation update; design team walkthrough planned

Commissioner Merkert told the Morrow County Board of Commissioners on Jan. 6 that schematic-design work is underway for a jail renovation project and that a design-team walkthrough will be scheduled next week.
Mer kert said the schematic design will show how existing space could be converted and what additional costs a new facility would entail. He said the county is pursuing a roughly $4,300,000 grant and a roughly $700,000 local contribution, which together would total about $5,000,000 to support the project. "I think, we'll have our schematic design of how the existing space can be converted as well as what a new additional cost for that facility. And then we'll start moving into the next molds. We can actually forward to accomplish the $4,300,000 grant and the $700,000 multiple contribution, so $5,000,000 voucher," Merkert said.
Why it matters: a renovation or replacement of a county jail affects county capital spending, inmate housing capacity and operations of the sheriff's office. The board's next steps, including completion of schematic drawings and a walkthrough by the design team, will inform any subsequent requests for funding or formal project approval.
Next steps and participation
Mer kert said representatives from the GLC team and the design firm BLZ requested a walk-through of the jail. He asked commissioners to share availability and said he would circulate date and time options once the design team confirms them. "If you'd like to be part of that process where we walk through the design team of BLZ, you're more than welcome to join us," Merkert said.
What the board did not decide
At the Jan. 6 session commissioners received an informational update and set no formal direction to award contracts or adopt final plans. No binding budget increase or contract award for the project was approved at the meeting.

Commissioners were invited to take part in the walk-through once the county shares scheduling information; staff will return with schematics and cost details as the project advances.
