Committee approves updated elevator rules, updates ANSI/ASME code references

The proposed rule changes restructure the chapter to match other DOPL boards, update incorporated codes to current ANSI/ASME editions, remove duplicative inspection language and clarify that audio communication in elevator cars is mandatory while visual communication is optional when internet connectivity is unavailable. "We removed rule 002.01ai… this requirement is in the 2023 Electrical Code and is duplicative," he said, and described several updates to ANSI/ASME references (for example, ASME A17.1 and related documents moved to later editions).
Touchstone said the adopted codes will be available at the division front counter because the referenced ANSI/ASME standards are not free online. The committee asked about stakeholder participation; Touchstone said the program engaged National Elevator Companies, technicians and installers and held stakeholder meetings and public hearings.
Senator Foreman moved to accept docket 24‑3940‑2401; the motion was seconded and carried by voice vote. The transcript records no roll‑call tally.
