An unnamed Department of Transportation nominee addressed a Senate committee, introduced his family and said he would focus on road safety, reducing regulatory delays on infrastructure projects and restoring confidence in aviation if confirmed.
An unnamed Department of Transportation nominee told a Senate committee he would prioritize road safety, reduce regulatory barriers to major infrastructure projects and work with Congress and the Federal Aviation Administration to restore confidence in aviation if confirmed.
The nominee opened his remarks by introducing his family and describing personal reasons for focusing on safety. “My wife, Rachel Camposteffi, and her nine children,” he said, adding that eight of the children were present. He said his youngest child, Valentina, who he said was born with Down syndrome, “no doubt is our family's favorite.”
The nominee invoked personal experience to underscore his emphasis on roadway safety, saying his wife survived a “deadly head on car crash” and noting that “every year, 40,000 Americans lose their lives in roadway accidents.” He said that if confirmed he would make road safety a priority to prevent “preventable accidents” that “forever change” families.
On infrastructure, the nominee said President Trump asked him to focus on “big, durable projects that connect our country and connect our people.” He said he would work to “reduce the red tape that slows critical infrastructure projects, ensuring funds are spent efficiently” and to “use the tax dollar well.”
On aviation, he said the U.S. needs “more air traffic controllers” and that the Department of Transportation would work with Congress and the FAA to modernize systems and “restore global confidence in Boeing” so “our skies are safe.” He also said the department should craft “clear regulations which balance safety, innovation, and cutting edge technology” as the nation sees greater use of drones, autonomous vehicles and space travel.
He framed transportation as central to daily life, saying it affects “how long it takes to get home to our loved ones” and that improvements “directly enhance every single American's life.” The nominee said he would seek to ensure funds are spent efficiently and that safety would remain “always paramount.”
The nominee thanked committee members for welcoming his family and said he looked forward to taking questions from the panel.
