According to the sheriff’s citation read to the commission, "Sergeant Gilbert demonstrated exceptional bravery, composure and quick thinking in a life or death situation that saved the life of an infant child." The citation said the sergeant removed the infant from the mother’s arms and delivered back blows until the infant began to cry and breathe again.
Sheriff’s Office leaders and commissioners recognized Gilbert at the meeting; no formal action was required. The honor was presented as part of staff reports and recognition for first-responder work during recent severe weather and public-safety incidents.
