Cowlitz County Health Department posts arsenic resources; board discusses possible testing map

Cowlitz County Health and Human Services staff told the Board of Health they have added an “Arsenic in Well Water” page to the county website, linked water testing laboratories and created a brochure for distribution.
Health Department staff demonstrated the page during the Board of Health meeting and said the page includes guidance on how to detect arsenic in private wells, treatment options and a link to laboratories that perform testing. Staff also brought printed copies of an arsenic brochure for board members and said they would make the publication available to the public.
Board members asked whether the department could provide a map that would show areas with higher arsenic incidence. Health staff said they would investigate creating a heat map but cautioned that such a map would only reflect wells that have been tested and reported to the county; many private wells have not been tested, and maps could give a false impression if the underlying testing coverage is limited.
Staff said a graduate student had been doing testing and that additional samples could improve any map’s usefulness. The Board of Health recommended staff explore options and be explicit on the website about limitations in testing coverage if a map is published.
No formal action was taken; staff said they will continue social media outreach about available well testing resources and will investigate data sources and mapping options.
