Kerr County moves ahead with IT security upgrades and records platform migration

Kerr County approved several IT-related procurements on Jan. 27 intended to strengthen cybersecurity and refresh an aging document-repository platform.
What the court approved
- Next-generation firewall and high-capacity switches for the sheriff’s office (vendor: Rx Technologies). County IT staff described the purchase as a redundancy and survivability upgrade; total cost cited was roughly $78,000 inclusive of three years of support.
- Endpoint Detection & Response (EDR) platform consolidating two existing antivirus/anti-phishing services (three-year cost cited at roughly $35,000). IT staff said the EDR will reduce the county’s attack surface and is budget-neutral when replacing two prior services.
- Service agreement with Digital Age Tech Consultants LLC to migrate the county’s Laserfiche document platform. Staff said the initial migration/install fee is approximately $8,500 and presented an annual cost figure for licensing/support that staff will manage in the record-keeping budget.
Why it matters
IT staff told the court these moves are to “harden” county infrastructure and to bring key systems toward current standards. County offices use Laserfiche to house older land records, commission backup documents and other vital records; the county clerk and other departments rely on the platform for access. IT staff said Laserfiche maintenance had lapsed and updates were needed to ensure continuity.
Budget and timing
IT staff and the sheriff’s office said the firewall and EDR costs were accounted for in the current fiscal-year budget. The Laserfiche migration requires an initial payment and an ongoing annual contract that staff said they will cover within departmental budgets or the countywide records budget.
Public records and access
County clerk staff explained Laserfiche contains scanned records, including older deed and court records; staff confirmed documents are saved as PDFs in the repository.
Ending
The court approved the purchases and the contract and directed staff to proceed with procurement and migration steps. IT staff said broader modernization (including migration to Office 365) remains in the planning schedule later this year.
