Wright County names Charles Webb interim county surveyor as long-serving surveyor retires

The Wright County Board of Commissioners formally appointed Charles Webb as interim county surveyor on Jan. 21, succeeding a longtime county surveyor who retired.

Administrator Mattice recommended Webb, who joined the county in May 2023 and previously operated a private surveying firm, for an interim appointment while the county begins recruitment for a permanent surveyor. The board voted unanimously to confirm Webb and noted he will take the oath on his first day in the role.

At the meeting the board and colleagues presented a plaque to the retiring county surveyor, identified in remarks as Steve, and praised his 19 years as Wright County surveyor. Speakers highlighted the departing surveyor's mentorship of newer staff and the expansion of technology and services during his tenure. Webb told the board he appreciated the opportunity and looked forward to working with county departments.

The appointment is interim while the county proceeds with a competitive recruitment process. The board directed administration to administer the oath and finalize start details; staff indicated the oath will be taken on Webb's first workday.

No additional directives or policy changes were made as part of the appointment; the motion simply formalized the interim staffing decision so surveyor responsibilities continue uninterrupted.
