Student services reports application for special education stipends; retiree recognized

Director of Student Services Dr. Cho told the board on Jan. 9, 2025, that the district submitted an application for special education stipends recently offered by the Oregon Department of Education. The state set aside $9.1 million for stipends to be distributed to classified and licensed staff who work directly with students with disabilities at least 70% of the time. Dr. Cho said the district applied for 47 staff members to receive the stipend and that the per-person amount will be determined by dividing the statewide pool by the number of qualifying applicants; she said the district does not yet know the stipend amount and estimates could range considerably.
Dr. Cho also recognized Donna Russell, a longtime special education instructional assistant who is retiring and plans to return as a substitute. Russell reportedly plans to ride her bicycle across the United States in retirement.
Board members thanked staff and recognized the importance of acknowledging special education staff contributions.
