Council hears operational updates on code blue shelter and volunteer support

Council members provided operational updates on Layton's emergency shelter "code blue" operations and broader interagency coordination on homelessness.

A council representative reported that nightly attendance at the code blue shelter began at one or two people, rose to three and peaked recently on a Tuesday night. Volunteers now staff three shifts to cover the overnight period, with typical volunteer stints of about four hours. The city has collected personal-donation items for shelter guests, and staff said the shelter currently has sufficient supplies for its needs.

Council members credited volunteer coordinators (including Christy Austin, named by councilors) for organizing donated breakfasts such as burritos and sausage muffins for those staying overnight. Councilors discussed public perception of homelessness and said they have not observed significant local social-media negativity in Layton; one councilor urged messaging to counter stereotypes, noting that shelter guests include people in crisis for many reasons such as house fires.

On interjurisdictional coordination, councilors reported that the COG (Council of Governments) clarified that an original regional task force remained intact despite earlier confusion over responsibilities shifting to the county. The group said the COG will re-evaluate membership after the current state legislative session.

No formal actions were taken; councilors requested staff continue coordination and public information efforts, and to return with additional updates as necessary.
