Clay County approves letter supporting Casa 36 bridge replacement grant

The Clay County Board of Commissioners on Jan. 14 approved a letter of support for a RAISE grant application to replace the Casa 36 bridge, a deficient structure north of Georgetown.
County staff member Justin told the board the engineer’s estimate for the project is about $10,000,000. If the grant is awarded, roughly 80% of the cost would be federal funds, with approximately $1,000,000 expected from state bridge bonding and $1,000,000 from Clay County as local match. Justin said the bridge is load-posted and described the structure as deficient; MnDOT performs fracture-critical inspections every other year and the county conducts its own inspections in alternating years.
Commissioners moved and seconded approval of the letter of support. With no further discussion, the board voted to approve the letter and the chair announced the motion carried.
The letter joins an ongoing set of applications: county staff indicated this RAISE application has been submitted multiple times previously for the same structure. If the grant is awarded, the funding mix described by staff would be used to advance design and replacement work.
