Public Arts Commission finalizes five-year plan, approves changes for City Council presentation

The Mesquite Public Arts Commission on Jan. 13 approved a five-year public arts plan and directed staff to present it to City Council.
Chair Karen said she had informed City Council that the commission would bring a five-year plan for council approval. Commissioners discussed edits before finalizing the plan: they removed the pollinator garden from year one after noting the city had not approved it, recommended moving it to a later year, and added language to year three to "help fund" Shakespeare or theater-related programming rather than committing full funding. Commissioners also asked that the commission add an annual review of the banner program (the seasonal arts banners) to the plan.
Commissioners discussed the timeline and agreed the plan should be a rolling document that would be revisited annually. The commission voted to approve the five-year plan and submit it to City Council for consideration. Chair Karen said she would present the plan to City Council at the next council meeting on Jan. 28 and requested staff alert the commission when city budget season opens so members can provide input on line items.
The motion to approve the plan passed by voice vote. Commissioners emphasized the plan's flexible, iterative nature and agreed to refine later years as the commission executes early priorities.
