Executive director: annual report distributed; BCC adopted several plan amendments, upcoming out‑of‑cycle land‑development code items announced

Melissa Zornita, executive director of the planning commission, delivered the executive director's report at the Jan. 13 meeting and distributed the commission's annual report and a strategic‑plan progress summary in advance of a full February presentation.
Zornita told commissioners that, since the last commission meeting, staff has briefed county commissioners and state legislators on regional transportation priorities and development projects. She summarized recent Board of County Commissioners (BCC) actions: in December the BCC approved two amendments (including an amendment near the Gibsonton Drive interchange) and last week it adopted three privately initiated urban service area expansion amendments that the planning commission had previously heard. She also said the BCC adopted one of two Gibson Drive amendments the commission had reviewed.
Zornita warned commissioners to expect several land‑development code amendments to come forward out of the normal cycle. She said one amendment relates to emergency provisions for permit and hearing time frames following disasters such as hurricanes, and another addresses requirements the county must adopt under state statute. Staff offered to provide details and answers to commissioners on those items ahead of future hearings if requested.
Zornita also previewed upcoming items: a public information committee meeting after the February regular meeting to discuss the annual design awards, and a public hearing on Tampa plan amendments at the February meeting. She reminded commissioners of a Feb. 24 public hearing to consider publicly initiated urban service area expansion amendments.
She noted the national American Planning Association conference will be in Denver March 29‑April 2 and said staff will circulate registration information; the agency hopes to accommodate commissioners who wish to attend.
