Board forms veterans-event subcommittee to plan Veterans Day program

At the Aug. 8 meeting the Senior Advisory Board said it will form a subcommittee to plan the city’s Veterans Day program and related events.

A staff presentation noted that a veterans-event group has evolved from earlier volunteer efforts and that Jackie and other staff and volunteers have been coordinating planning; the meeting record shows that "Matt" was already serving on the working committee and that the board sought additional members to assist with speaker recruitment, entertainment and awards. Board members described past program elements — including presentations, music and commemorative coins — and discussed broadening outreach to include veterans from more recent conflicts (Korean, Vietnam and Middle East-era veterans) as well as maintaining traditions that drew World War II-era attendees in past years.

Members asked for more participation from the senior advisory board on the planning committee so that volunteers could help secure speakers, entertainment and logistics. Board members said a parade-style event would be desirable in the future but that construction and site constraints make a parade unlikely in the short term.

No formal vote was recorded; the meeting minutes indicate staff and board members will continue planning and recruit additional volunteers for the subcommittee.
