Board redesignates Racine Alternative Learning from school to program to simplify reporting

The Racine Unified School District Board of Education voted Oct. 20 to change the district classification of Racine Alternative Learning from a standalone school to a district program.

The change matters because, according to staff, the alternative-learning site houses multiple distinct programs and the current school designation requires separate state plans and reporting that are difficult for a transient population and a single building to sustain.

District staff explained Racine Alternative Learning houses 13 different programs and had been designated a CSI (Comprehensive Support and Improvement) school by federal/state identification. Staff said reclassifying the site as a program will leave in‑place the building and services for students but change how students are reported to the state: students will be reported through their home school rather than as a separate school entity. Staff said the change will reduce duplicative plan requirements and reporting burdens on RAL staff.

Board members asked whether students' day-to-day attendance or services would change; staff said operations and in‑building programming would continue unchanged and only reporting/identification would change.

The motion to change Racine Alternative Learning's designation passed on a recorded roll‑call vote, 9–0.
