Green Valley highlights reading, behavior and student leadership programs

Michelle, principal at Green Valley School, told the Rescue Union Elementary School District board that the campus prioritized reading, social-emotional supports and new student leadership structures during the past school year.
The principal said Green Valley pupils collectively read “over a 100,000,000 words last year,” and described year-round reading activities including a readathon, an author visit and a “Battle of the Books” competition that engaged fourth and fifth graders. She said schoolwide reading goals drove an end‑of‑year celebration with games, performances and family events.
The presentation placed equal emphasis on student behavior supports. Michelle described a schoolwide PBIS (positive behavioral interventions and supports) program, a new PBIS facilitator role piloted at Green Valley, and a recent “Foursquare contract” used to teach sportsmanship. “It’s made a huge difference, already,” she said about the contract.
Michelle also described expanded lunchtime intramurals for fourth and fifth graders (a volunteer-run volleyball program three days a week) and other enrichment offerings that run after school. She credited staff, parent volunteers and classified staff for helping run those activities.
Student leadership adviser Kat Wilbur described restructuring the student leadership group into three teams — ambassadors, school spirit/events and events/fundraising — each led by student captains. Captains Neli Britton, Casey Mae Simon and Elise (surname not specified) spoke to the board about team duties such as welcoming new students, planning rallies and helping with school events.
Board members praised Green Valley’s focus on reading, the PBIS work and the leadership opportunities for students. Trustee comments noted the school’s emphasis on academics alongside extracurriculars and the value of sustained community involvement.
