Commission approves Riley County hosting Certified Public Manager program

Riley County commissioners voted Oct. 6 to allow county staff to host and participate in the Certified Public Manager (CPM) program and to invite other public entities to enroll.
Laurie Muir, administrative services manager for Public Works, told commissioners the CPM program is a nationally accredited, 12-month, 300-hour leadership course that typically meets two days per month and culminates with a capstone project tied to participants’ jobs. Muir said the early-bird registration cost is $3,900 per person and the maximum class size is about 25–30; the program requires a minimum cohort to run and yields one free participant slot to the host organization.
Commissioners asked about capacity, venue and cost; Muir said potential local venues include the Public Works training room or the new EMS headquarters training room and that several department heads had expressed interest. Staff said participating county employees would use their department training budgets to pay registration costs.
A motion to approve hosting the CPM program and to reach out to neighboring cities, counties and Kansas State University to solicit participation was moved, seconded and carried by voice vote. County staff will open registration in February for a program expected to start in July and will coordinate enrollment and facilities if the minimum cohort is met.
The CPM program was described in the meeting as covering succession planning, budget, strategic planning, communications, policy for public managers and related leadership topics.
