Supervisors approve two three-year gravel-pit leases

Kossuth County supervisors approved two separate three-year farm/gravel-pit leases and authorized the chair to sign both documents. The leases renew existing terms and cover pits outside the county’s immediate borders (one in Palo Alto County). Supervisors also authorized advertising two additional gravel-pit parcels for bid.
County Engineer/roads staff said lease terms match the last three years and presented a location map for each site. The board first voted to authorize a three-year farm lease with David Blackman for Section 20 of Fairfield Township (motion: Haas; second: Wachter) and then authorized a similar lease with Dahlhauser for Section 16 in Whittemore (motion: Wachter; second: Haas). Both motions carried on voice votes. Staff then said they would start advertising for two more pits — the Cylinder pit (tenant declined renewal, ~14 acres) and pasture land at Hutchins — with bid opening and review dates provided to the board for future consideration.
Why it matters: gravel pits supply road maintenance material; leases generate revenue and control access and reclamation responsibilities. The board approved standard-term renewals and set the schedule to advertise additional county-owned parcels for lease.
