Library reports circulation, programs and staff changes; seeks new library system

Library Manager Gwen reported September circulation and program statistics, outlined upcoming programs, named new hires, and said the library is soliciting bids to replace its 15-year-old library software system.
Library Manager Gwen told the Los Alamos County Library Board that the library recorded 25,122 print circulations and 9,613 digital circulations in September, for a total of 34,733 circulations.
The library held 68 programs in September with total attendance of 1,277. Upcoming events include a small concert and discussion by Love Call at 6 p.m. tomorrow and two Pastel Society of New Mexico workshops and a November display by pastel artists on Nov. 2.
Gwen said staff are reviewing bids to replace the library’s integrated library system; the current vendor has been in place for more than 15 years. Among the committee’s priorities for a new system is the ability to accept credit-card payments, a capability the current system does not provide. Gwen said the procurement process will include demonstrations and an evaluation committee, and the library could also choose to remain with its current vendor.
Both library branches will be closed Friday, Nov. 7 for staff development and training. Gwen reported recent hires and pending recruitments: Rochelle McElderry will start Oct. 13 as senior librarian for digital services; Kate Cardenio King will start Nov. 24 as operations librarian; the library will recruit for two three-quarter-time library associate positions.
Gwen also reported that the Friends of the Los Alamos County Library handles surplus-material sales and donates proceeds to the library, which total about $45,000 a year; the Friends have expanded sales channels to include ThriftBooks.
Gwen noted that the community services department was a Gold Medal finalist for accreditation by the National Recreation and Park Association and that a plaque presentation was planned for the county council meeting the following day.
