The Jackson County Commission voted to adopt a resolution encouraging the Alabama Legislature to oppose any changes that would disrupt the Simplified Sellers Use Tax (SSUT) program or call its constitutionality into question.
Commission leadership said the SSUT program, enacted in 2015, establishes a process by which the state collects use taxes from eligible sellers on behalf of Alabama consumers. The resolution states the county “fully supports the current SSUT program as an efficient constitutional and operationally effective process for collecting use taxes here on behalf of Alabama consumers.”
Commissioners moved and seconded the resolution and approved it by voice vote. The chair called for “all in favor,” and the motion carried.
The resolution expresses the commission’s opposition to legislative changes that, in the county’s view, could disrupt SSUT operations or threaten its constitutionality. The commission did not identify specific proposed bills or legislative sponsors during the meeting.
