Monroe County amends speed‑hump policy to require commissioner approval

The Monroe County Board of Commissioners on Sept. 4 amended and approved the county’s speed‑hump policy to add an explicit requirement that any proposed speed‑hump installation be submitted to and approved by the Board of Commissioners.

Public Works staff told commissioners the policy was initially written in February 2007 but no record of a final commission approval could be found; the traffic commission reviewed the updated policy on Aug. 21 and recommended minimal changes. Staff emphasized the county highway does not install speed humps — installation is the responsibility of residents or homeowners associations following the county’s written process — and cited snow‑plow compatibility as a reason the county avoids installing humps.

Commissioner Thomas moved to amend the policy to add Board approval of installations; the amendment was seconded and the motion to amend passed 3‑0. The amended policy was then approved by roll call, 3‑0.

Commissioners said the policy clearly centralizes the application process and makes explicit that neighbors and HOAs must initiate requests if they want speed humps in their subdivisions.
