District reports turf testing shows subsurface wear; forecasts $600K–$800K replacement need
Summary
Facilities staff reported results from biannual turf testing: six repaired tears, GMX hardness readings between 134 and 157 (below the ASTM concern threshold of 200), and a district forecast and set-aside for turf replacement estimated at $600,000–$800,000.

Facilities staff told the Buildings and Grounds meeting they completed the second of two annual turf services and testing on the field. The service team repaired six tears and ran 11 GMX hardness tests plus one calibration test.
Staff said test results ranged from 134 to 157 on the hardness scale; they cited ASTM guidance that a hardness value of 200 indicates the subsurface should be removed and replaced. Based on the current readings, staff said the turf subsurface is roughly at three-quarters of its expected life and that the product condition remains "fair." Staff said they plan another, more aggressive service in mid-October that will address low spots and include passing a magnet over the turf to remove metal fragments.
On replacement funding, staff said the district previously forecasted $600,000 to replace the turf and that recent planning estimates range up to $800,000, including installation. Staff noted a cell-tower revenue stream has contributed "a couple $100,000" into the turf replacement fund and that the district hopes to avoid drawing the full amount from general funds. Staff also referenced a contract with Lake Health that will end in August of next year and may be relevant to revenue or usage agreements.
Ending
Staff said they will continue regular testing and maintenance and that the district is monitoring costs and set-aside funds while planning for a likely turf replacement in the coming years. No procurement or final replacement decision occurred at the meeting.
