Boone Area Transit System reports record ridership, vehicle recall limits service hours
Summary
BATS reported its highest month of ridership in July but said a manufacturer recall affecting three Dodge Grand Caravans has limited service capacity and staffing; system operates about 20 vehicles with 22 drivers.
Anita Bowen, director of the Boone Area Transit System (BATS), told the Boone County commissioners that the system set a ridership record in July but is constrained by a manufacturer recall that removed three of its Dodge Grand Caravans from service.
Bowen said the recall involves side‑airbag defects tied to potentially serious consequences and affects transit systems nationwide. BATS operates about 20 vehicles and 22 drivers; Bowen said the loss of three vehicles has impeded efforts to expand hours and return trips for some riders.
Bowen highlighted service for older adults, Medicaid passengers and ARC clients, and gave examples of individuals who rely on BATS for employment, classes and outings. She said the agency is tracking an increase in demand beyond traditional client groups and hopes to extend hours when vehicles are repaired.
Commissioners asked whether a repair timetable exists; Bowen said updates come from INDOT and that Dodge has not yet released a remedy. She said staff will report back when a remedy or timeline becomes available.
