Plainview ISD introduces new head wrestling coach, outlines program vision

Plainview ISD introduced Daniel Martinez as the district’s new high school wrestling coach and heard his vision for building a competitive program that emphasizes discipline, work ethic and community partnerships.

Who and what: Martinez told the board he plans to field a 9–12 program, train at donated local facilities and rely on volunteer assistants and local sponsors. He said sponsors already committed include Logodogs, Whataburger, John Deere, Walmart and Happy State Bank. Martinez described the program’s culture this way: “The program is being built on hard work, discipline, and relentless determination. From day one, we will demand the best from ourselves and from each other.”

Supporting staff and logistics: Board presenters introduced Coach Reid as an assistant who is a former state wrestling champion from Caprock High School and a collegiate wrestler; Reid will support Martinez while continuing as a full‑time dual‑credit chemistry teacher and head tennis coach. District leaders said the program will serve ninth through 12th grades and will include community facility partnerships and volunteer coaches.

Why it matters: District officials described the hire as part of an effort to expand extracurricular opportunities and to set a foundation for long‑term program success. The item was presented as an introduction and report; trustees did not take formal action at the meeting.
