Public commenter urges board to request CPALMS allow creationism with evolution in science standards

During the public-comment portion of the Highlands County School Board meeting, resident Larry Overfield urged the board to press state officials to allow creationism to be taught alongside evolution in public-school science curricula.
Overfield framed his remarks with religious references and cited statistics he said were from 2023 on homicide victims by age groups. He argued that “creation over evolution is logical” and asked the board to write to state representatives and the Florida Department of Education to request edits to CPALMS so that students could be taught creation alongside evolution "to give our students choice in science."
The board accepted the public comment and moved on to its superintendent’s report and other agenda items. No board action on curriculum standards was recorded at the meeting.
