Committee backs exploring dynamic transit pricing, service extensions for large events

The Miami-Dade County Transportation, Planning and Mobility Committee approved an item asking county transit staff to pursue options for dynamic pricing and potential service extensions during large events, while preserving protections for regular riders.

Sponsors described the proposal as a way to capture weekend and event-related trips that private providers currently dominate and to offer an affordable, predictable alternative to expensive ride-hailing fares. A commissioner said similar approaches are being tried elsewhere and emphasized that any pricing changes would return to the board for approval. “Any sort of change in the pricing comes back to this board,” one commissioner said.

Committee members repeatedly raised concerns about protecting regular weekday riders, students and employees from potential price increases. County staff responded that most everyday riders use weekly or monthly passes and that those pass products could be insulated from dynamic fares. A county staff member said, "This is not to get more money out of our current ridership. It's to offer folks who otherwise would be spending $40, $50, $60 to park at the stadium or take an Uber to have a less expensive public option." The item also contemplates pilot efforts tied to major events such as the World Cup and Art Basel so staff can assess operational impacts.

Commissioner Bastian moved the item; Commissioner Regalado seconded, and the committee adopted it by voice vote. Staff said the department already plans to test some ideas around World Cup activity and will report results to the commission.

The committee's action sends staff work products and pilot proposals back for future board consideration, with specific pricing and protections to be developed and returned to the Board of County Commissioners for approval before implementation.
