The Urbandale Community School District Board discussed a facilities planning update Sept. 8 that included cost comparisons for operating the current district office, the Rolling Green building and an estimate of running Rolling Green as a district office. No action or financial commitment was taken.
Superintendent (name not specified) said the item was placed on every future agenda before the superintendent's report so the board and public would not lose the conversation around Rolling Green and broader master planning. The superintendent described three cost comparisons in the agenda packet: fiscal-year figures for Rolling Green when it was largely empty; current operating costs for the administrative office (AO) complex, including storage; and an estimate of costs to operate Rolling Green if repurposed as a district office.
The superintendent said the materials and a public FAQ will be kept on the district website for community review and that staff will continue the master planning discussion at future meetings. The board discussed storage needs: a board member asked whether stored district materials would fit if Rolling Green housed both administrative and maintenance functions; staff said yes, if the AO and maintenance components are relocated to Rolling Green, current storage would fit inside that footprint. Staff described two small garage areas and several offices currently used for maintenance storage at the high school; they said additional exterior storage under the bleachers is being organized and that Jared (staff) is working on cleanup and organization.
Board members were told that Tim Oswald of Piper Sandler will return on Aug. 22 (noted on earlier agenda) to provide additional financial analysis on the district's general obligation bond capacity; staff said that information will help the board decide what additional information to request.
No motions were made on facilities planning during the meeting; the superintendent characterized the discussion as ongoing and informational.
