Mobridge council approves temporary Conex container permit for 509 Second Avenue West

The Mobridge City Council approved a conditional use permit for one temporary Conex storage container at 509 Second Avenue West on a motion the council adopted unanimously.

The permit allows a single 20-foot-by-8-foot container for renovation and storage during work on the building and extends the permit so the container may remain for a total of three years (the applicant already held one year). The council said staff would revisit the permit if an official complaint is filed.

Mr. Stall, who described the unit for the record, said, "It is, it's a 20 foot storage unit container. It's 8 foot wide and 20 foot long." The applicant, Stone, told the council the container already contains materials and estimated the renovation work would take "about a year and a half," adding he expected the building work would provide permanent storage inside the building once finished.

Council discussion focused on limiting the number and size of containers and the permit duration. A council member proposed allowing no more than one container, 20 feet long by 8 feet wide, and extending the current one-year permit by two additional years for a total of three years. Council members said the permit could be revoked if a formal, substantiated complaint were received. A motion to approve the conditional use permit with those conditions was made, seconded and approved with all members voting "Aye."

The conditional use permit applies to Lots 4A, 8A and 9A, Block 39, at 509 Second Avenue West in Mobridge. The council did not state a specific enforcement timeline beyond reviewing any official complaints that might arise.

The applicant thanked the council at the close of the item and said he appreciated the accommodation while renovations continue.
