Valley County road staff reported Wednesday that a culvert near a resident's property collapsed and that crews plan to replace it, temporarily pausing paving work.
Staff described a roughly 10-foot section of roadway that "floated" and began cracking near a telephone pole; the crew worked extended hours to stabilize the area and will need to shut down paving operations for a day to bring three workers to install the new culvert. The county said paving currently occupies most of the crew, leaving only minimal staff ("one blade and one water truck") available to handle emergency culvert replacement.
Staff also reported removing a beaver dam that had plugged a culvert and flooded a property owned by Lance Hess; the dam removal downstream by a bridge required additional crew time. One staff member said they had worked 13 hours responding to the issue.
Commissioners asked for updates on the repair plan and scheduling to minimize disruption to other county road projects. The board recessed the morning session and planned to reconvene at 1 p.m. for a public hearing on the McCall impact area.
