Summary
The commission's cultural committee approved a logo concept for Tulsa Asia Fest, confirmed a $5,000 presenting sponsor, and discussed vendor recruitment, programming and partnerships for a Jan. 31 festival at the convention center.
Organizers for Tulsa Asia Fest told the Asian Affairs Commission they have chosen a branding direction, secured a presenting sponsor and are moving toward vendor recruitment and programming for a festival planned for Jan. 31 at the convention center.
The Cultural Committee reported it reviewed two logo concepts and voted to move forward with an abstract gate-themed design intended to represent shared architectural and cultural motifs across Asian regions. The committee said the designer is Mana, a freelance photographer who also serves as the commission's marketing lead.
"Mana...designed the AppSheet logo and she said that she doesn't experience and I said, I don't think so. I think, you know, pretty amazing darn good job," a committee member said when introducing the designer.
The committee approved a sponsor benefits structure and announced Williams as a presenting sponsor at $5,000. Members discussed using sponsorship benefits for items such as tote bags and other on-site branding. The committee also plans to open vendor registration and a vendor application form later in October.
Programming ideas discussed included performances and an Asian fashion show; committee members also described outreach plans with community partners, including an AAPI community group (referred to in the meeting as Pia Tulsa / APIDA) to assist with marketing and social media. The committee emphasized that, as a city commission, it has limits on directly promoting private events and will lean on community partners for some outreach functions.
Members discussed long-term planning for the festival and said they want the Asian Affairs Commission to grow into a more advisory capacity over time while empowering community organizations to run the event.
No formal vote or contract award for the festival venue or vendors was recorded at the meeting; the committee reported ongoing planning milestones and asked commissioners to help identify sponsors and volunteers.
