Commission approves new street-tree designations for Meggs Road and West Carrillo Street (Carrillo Hill) ahead of bike/ped improvements

Summary
The commission approved redesignating street-tree species for the 400–800 blocks of Meggs Road and the 700–1,200 blocks of West Carrillo Street, selecting island oak, gold medallion tree and crepe myrtle to support canopy goals and visual interest tied to the Westside bike and pedestrian improvement project.
The Parks and Recreation Commission on Aug. 27 approved a redesignation of street-tree species for two segments of the Carrillo Hill corridor — the 400–800 blocks of Meggs Road and the 700–1,200 blocks of West Carrillo Street — selecting island oak, gold medallion tree and crepe myrtle as the primary species.
Staff said the review links directly to the Westside bike and pedestrian improvement project; planners expect 66 trees will be planted as part of that work and wanted a consistent species palette that balances canopy potential, water use and visual interest. "The committee was really interested in making sure that crepe myrtle was, introduced to the street and became part of the formal designation and then identify something that had the potential to develop more of a canopy over time," the staff presenter said.
Commissioners asked about the water-use classification system for selected species; staff said the city follows statewide Water Use Classification of Landscape Species (Region 3) guidance and coordinates with the water conservation team to favor low water-use species where required by project type.
The commission approved both block-range redesignations to support the streetscape changes expected with the bike-and-pedestrian improvements.
