Klamath County finance staff updated the Board of Commissioners on the county's Tyler software implementation and a proposed staffing change in payroll operations.
Staff said orientation meetings with users of the county's finance software are underway as the county implements Tyler (a financial/ERP platform). Separately, the county's long-time payroll clerk announced retirement; staff proposed combining payroll clerk responsibilities with another finance position and increasing the pay range by about two salary ranges (roughly a 10% increase) to attract a candidate to perform the combined duties.
The plan would keep the payroll clerk II position vacant for the remainder of the fiscal year while testing the consolidated role, with the county's financial accountant providing secondary support and backup. "If it just doesn't work, we would go back to the 2 positions," a staff member said.
Commissioners expressed support for efforts to streamline positions and asked that the trial period include safeguards to ensure payroll is performed accurately; staff agreed. No formal board action was taken; staff said they will attempt the consolidation by hiring into the combined role and reassess if workload or quality concerns emerge.
