Willis ISD board convenes closed session under Texas Government Code 551.071; no actions announced

Willis ISD held a special Board of Trustees meeting on Aug. 13 that moved into closed session to consult with legal counsel under Texas Government Code 551.071 and returned to open session with no formal actions announced.

Chad Jones, staff member, called the roll at the start of the meeting and confirmed that the meeting had been posted in the time and manner required by law. Board members present included Cliff Williams, Scott Carson, Charles Perry, Kyle Vegemeyer, Paulette Traylor and Nikkita Lagway.

There were no public comments before the board went into closed session. The board cited Texas Government Code 551.071 as the basis for the closed-session consultation with attorneys. Board members noted that attorney Randy Bates was present for a presentation, and that a second attorney, Blake of Walsh Gallegos, would arrive later in the meeting. Board members briefly recessed to eat while awaiting counsel’s arrival.

The board reconvened into open session at 7 p.m. and reported that there were no motions originating from the closed session. The board then addressed future meeting dates: a workshop on Lone Star governance is scheduled for Wednesday, Aug. 20 at 4:30 p.m., followed by a proposed 2025–2026 budget workshop and the regular board meeting at 5:30 p.m. on the same day.

Cliff Williams moved to adjourn the special meeting; Scott Carson seconded the motion. The board carried the motion by voice vote and adjourned at 7:00 p.m.

The board recorded that the meeting had been posted as required by law; no additional votes or policy decisions were disclosed in the meeting minutes or on the record.
