Derby Board approves facility-use changes, safety software pilots and routine items in 7-0 votes

The Derby Board of Education on Sept. 22 voted unanimously on a package of routine and policy items, including updated facility-use regulations and fees and pilot programs for two safety and security software tools.

The board approved updated facility-use regulations and a revised fee schedule after a committee review and a public discussion of rental categories and custodial fees. The board then approved two pilot programs for safety and visitor-management software — SlideSoft, a behavioral threat-assessment tool, and Hall Pass, a visitor-management/hall-pass system — that administrators said will be tested at Derby High School and Derby Hills Elementary, respectively.

Board members also cleared routine agenda items and committee and personnel reports, including approval of minutes and past hearings, multiple consent-agenda items (donations, out-of-state travel requests, textbook and committee appointments, personnel reports and claims), and a set of policy updates and the superintendent evaluation timeline. All recorded motions passed on voice votes of 7-0.

Burke Jones, director of operations, summarized the committee work on facility-use rules and said the revised guidelines clarify when district employees may use classrooms for graded instruction without rental fees and when camps must pay facility rates. He told the board the committee rewrote and consolidated policies to remove duplicate language and to clarify custodial and rental expectations.

Assistant Superintendent Becky Manor described the two software pilots before the board moved for action. She said SlideSoft would be piloted at Derby High School and would incorporate the Columbia risk-assessment element and an ability to integrate records with Skyward. Manor said the district had negotiated pilot terms at no cost and would bring back expense information if it recommended full implementation. She told the board the Hall Pass pilot at Derby Hills would use a kiosk and that its recurring costs would be comparable to the district’s existing visitor system after integration fees.

Board members moved and seconded the various motions; the meeting record does not state individual mover and seconder names for the routine items. Vote tallies recorded on the transcript show each action as passing by a 7-0 vote.

The meeting concluded with a motion to enter an executive session to discuss non-elected personnel matters; that motion also passed 7-0.
