Durant said the district faces "urgency" tied to state accountability results and said the board believes Cuellar can guide the district "through this critical moment and into a future where our students succeed at the highest level."
Trustees offered public praise for Cuellar's early steps in the interim role. Trustee McDaniel commended Cuellar and the board president for their work on the search; Trustee Jensen said, "We are well aware that we are facing some huge challenges and some hard, hard work. . . the board is with you all the way." Trustee Hodges and others expressed support for the appointment and the desire for continued transparency and accountability.
Dr. Craig Cuellar, addressing the board and audience after the vote, thanked trustees and the district community and said he was committed "to the care of our 34,000 students and 5,000 staff." He said he would "give it everything I have" to improve learning across the district and asked for community and staff support as the district pursues improvements in culture and accountability.
The board closed the public portion of the agenda by taking the vote; trustees present and recorded in the meeting were Trustee Hodges, Trustee Correa, Trustee McDaniel, Trustee Adams, Trustee Jensen and Trustee Durant. The motion carried unanimously.
